Benefits of Cervical Cancer Screening
Regular cervical cancer screening allows women to detect cancer at an early stage when it is curable. Screening for cervical cancer can also detect abnormal cells that may develop into cancers and doctors can remove these abnormal cells to prevent cancers. Women with higher risk and who do not attend screening are more likely to develop cancers that are at late stages when it is harder to cure. As cervical cancer is the third most common cancer in women, doctors recommend that women undergo regular screening for early detection and prevention of cervical cancer as it lowers the chance of dying from cervical cancer.
Genevieve's Story
Risks of Cervical Cancer Screening
Screening tests may sometimes appear to be abnormal even though no cancer is present. Women who have abnormal test results may need more tests and procedures (such as colposcopy, cryotherapy) and this may cause anxiety.
Limitations of Cervical Cancer Screening
Pap smears and HPV tests may miss some cancers, but the chance of missing a cancer is very low
